Top Ten Natural Teeth Whiteners

Posted on

Everybody wants beautiful white teeth, but many people are not prepared to use synthetic chemicals to improve their smiles. The various methods and products available for teeth whitening are expensive, and may pose hidden dangers to your health. If you want to whiten your teeth using completely natural products, you can try one or more of these ten ideas:

  1. Salt – People have been using salt for hundreds of years as an effective plaque stain remover. Mix some baking soda with regular table salt and delicately rub the mixture on your teeth with your toothbrush. Don't scrub too hard, or you might harm your tooth enamel and gums.
  2. Hydrogen peroxide – Make a paste with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, and gently brush your teeth with it. Afterwards, brush again with regular toothpaste. Don't do this daily, as it can make your teeth sensitive and irritate your gums.
  3. Baking soda – Mix ¼ tsp baking soda with some toothpaste twice a week and brush.
  4. Holy Basil – This plant is native to South Asia and India, and is not the same as regular basil. Dry some leaves in the sun for several hours, and then grind them to a powder in a food processor. Mix the powder with regular toothpaste. The active agents in Holy Basil also help prevent advanced periodontal diseases.
  5. Margosa (Neem) – This is another plant native to South Asia and India, and its leaves not only clean yellow teeth, but also fight dental decay and bad breath with its antiseptic properties. Chew on the margosa branches or use them like toothbrushes to whiten and protect your teeth at the same time.
  6. Apples – As a supplement to regular brushing, eating one or two apples a day will help remove yellow stains from your teeth because of the acidic juices released and scrubbing action of pieces of apple against your teeth when you chew.
  7. Orange peels - The calcium and vitamin C in orange peels work to fight the chemicals that make your teeth yellow. For several weeks, rub a fresh orange peel across your teeth every night before going to sleep.
  8. Lemon juice and peels – Like oranges, lemons also have lots of vitamin C and they also contain acid that fights stains. Use a lemon peel to scrub your teeth, or gargle with fresh lemon juice.
  9. Strawberries – Make a strawberry paste by grinding strawberries in your blender. Twice a day, rub the paste on your teeth. You should notice less yellow discoloring in a few weeks.
  10. Charcoal – Mix some toothpaste with a small amount of charcoal powder, or burnt toast and rosemary. Gently brush with the mixture twice a day.

You can experiment with one or all of these natural teeth whitening methods. Take a photo of your teeth before you begin, and again a few weeks later. Are your teeth whiter?
