Suffering From Gum Disease? Know About These Three Treatments

Posted on

Are you currently suffering with gum disease and want to take the necessary steps to fix it? Know that there are a few different treatments for gum disease that can help you recover from this problem. Here is an overview of three different treatments a periodontist can perform.

Laser Therapy

It's possible to have gum disease treated with lasers, which typically takes a few sessions to complete the treatment process. The amount of times you need to return for additional treatments will depend on how bad your gum disease has become, with each treatment lasting a few hours.

You can expect a relatively easy recovery process after laser therapy. You'll be capable of driving home from the dentist office after the procedure. Some people even return to work that same day. There will not be issues with bleeding gums or stitches after using laser therapy due to the gums not being cut. Over the various techniques to treat gum disease, laser therapy is considered to not be very invasive.

Pocket Removal Surgery

Your dentist may recommend pocket removal surgery to treat your gum disease. It involves using local anesthesia for the procedure due to how invasive the surgery is. It requires making an incision to get under the gums, which will help the dentist get to the infected portion of the gums to fix it.

Pocket removal surgery will take a single session to have done, with it being a couple hours long. You'll then need about one week to recover afterwards at home. Your gums will need time to properly heal and help you feel more comfortable, and that will not happen if you are putting stress on your body. Expect sensitivity and soreness during that first week, after which you'll need to have the sutures removed from your gums.

Tissue and Bone Regeneration

Bone and tissue regeneration surgery is a procedure that has some invasiveness, but can still be done in a single session. Recovery wise, you'll need a day or two after the surgery to allow your body to heal.

Expect to take antibiotics to prevent infections from happening. Swelling can be dealt with by applying ice packs to the area. You'll need to eat soft foods after the surgery, making sure to avoid any foods that are considered spicy or salty.
