If you are pregnant, you may have set appointments with an OBGYN, but don't forget to set regular appointments with your dentist as well. The CDC says that between 60% to 75% of pregnant women suffer from gingivitis, a precursor of periodontal (gum) disease. Take a look at why pregnancy can affect your oral health and how you can take good care of your gums during this time.  

Why are Pregnant Women Prone to Gum Issues?

Pregnancy comes with major hormone fluctuations of progesterone and estrogen. These hormonal changes can cause sensitivity and heighten inflammatory responses in gum tissue. Because gum tissue may be extra sensitive during this time, it's easy to forgo regular brushing and flossing, which can lead to gingivitis and the development of gum pockets. Some women may experience cravings for sugary or acidic foods, which could also lead to an increased risk of bad oral bacteria. If you are vomiting a lot from morning sickness, then stomach acid and bacteria could cause ulcerations on gum tissue.

Could Gum Issues Affect the Baby?

The Journal of Periodontology conducted a study that found that bacteria that's commonly associated with periodontal disease could also be found in amniotic fluid. The study didn't find a direct causal link between periodontal disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes, but it did encourage women to take good care of their oral health during pregnancy. However, other clinical trials have found that when women undergo oral prophylaxis (dental cleaning) and periodontal treatments, there was a reduction in preterm births and low birthweight.

How Can You Improve Your Gum Health?

Make an appointment with your dentist to see if you need more frequent cleanings or deeper periodontal cleanings. He or she can measure gum tissue around your teeth to make sure that no pockets are forming. Ask your dentist about toothbrush and toothpaste recommendations that won't further irritate sensitive gum tissue.

If you are dealing with morning sickness, be sure to rinse out your mouth with water to clear any stomach acid. Then wait about a half an hour before brushing so that you aren't pushing stomach acid into enamel with your toothbrush.

Xerostomia, or dry mouth, can contribute to gum issues, so be sure that you are staying well hydrated during this time. If your gums are sensitive to hot or cold drinks, try using a straw. While it may be tough to limit certain food cravings, you can ask your dentist for some dietary recommendations. If you avoid sugary/acidic foods, you can reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum issues.
